How to be an online Mompreneur by Rebecca Temsen
Being a mom is not an easy task but we all know how fulfilling it can be. Being an entrepreneur is a whole different matter. Both have it's challenges and advantages. This may be a dream to most, finding what you want in life. To work from home and have time for the kids. So how do we become a mom and an entrepreneur? I find that the easiest way to do this is to do it from home. More specifically, online. Why? We get to stay with our kids all day while working flexible hours. Don't get me wrong, flexible hours does not mean we don't work much. We moms still need to put in the hours. So here are a few things you can do to be an online mompreneur.
Mom Blog
Starting a mom blog may be the easiest way to do it. I know some of you are thinking, 'a mom blog? that has nothing to do with being an entrepreneur' but stick with me. A mom blog can easily generate a full time revenue. Things like ads, product reviews, affiliates and many more are options of monetizing the blog. It's quite simple and most of the work is writing posts that help other moms based on your own daily struggles. It's also a stepping stone for other collaborations or building a brand for yourself. For example, with a following of moms who trusts your opinion, you can easily come up with a product and sell it to them.
Ecommerce Store
An ecommerce store is a great way to be a mompreneur! For starters, you can sell just about anything you want. Why is this a good option? Work hours are flexible and you don't have to send the products out right away. There are lots of options that can suit stay at home moms. For example, if you have a certain hobby like knitting, you can sell those products. Alternatively, you can just resell products under your brand. The sky's the limit here, you just need to be as creative as you can.
There are many more options but I just wanted to cover the most common ones. Now how do we go about being a successful mom and entrepreneur altogether?
Being a Successful Mompreneur
To be a success at anything takes considerable commitment and passion. Being both a great mom and a great entrepreneur might seem like a daunting task but it can be much easier than you think. Follow these tips and you'll be on your way:
1. Be Productive
Plan your time ahead and take the opportunity to make things easier. Use a planner or a diary, making sure you get certain things done. Use the pareto principle to get things done more efficiently.
2. Involve the kids
If your kids are old enough, get them involved. The little things can help take some burden of you and they help the kids keep busy. I find that this will also build a stronger bond between myself and the kids!
3. Don't multitask
Multitasking might be a good skill for a mom, but it's not in a business. Take things one problem at a time. This might mean taking some time off your mom schedule and not get distracted by other duties. Make sure the timing is good and set aside some time for work.
4. Don't get too stressed out
There's a lot to handle. The kids, the husband, the household chores, and now the business!! Take a step back and remember why you're doing this. Stressing yourself out won't help you at all. Know that the family always comes first, thats why you're a mompreneur, not an entrepreneur.
5. Learn as you go
This is something all moms need to wrap their minds around. I understand that we as moms always try to have control over everything but lets face it, it's never the case. Especially in business, learning as we go is very good advice. And if you're new to being a mompreneur like me, it's always good to take these lessons and build on them.
If you're serious about being an online mompreneur, just remember that you're not alone. I read articles all the time about being a successful mom in business. Entrepreneur.com has a specific section for moms. That's one of my favourite go to places to learn more. Probably about 30% of the articles (made up number) are more about online mompreneurs. Take it from an average mom like myself, it's not as hard as it sounds and the results can be so fulfilling. Don't give up spending time children while they're young. Thats when the strongest relationships are built!
